Mason Temple is a Canadian actor best known for playing Hunter Chen in Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia. Before gaining recognition through the series, he trained in theatre, performed in Canadian stage productions and appeared in smaller television roles.
His career combines theatre, television and film, while his work on Ginny & Georgia includes an interesting behind-the-scenes contribution that goes beyond acting.
Who Is Mason Temple?
Mason Temple is an actor with Taiwanese and Canadian roots who grew up in Fort St. John, British Columbia. His interest in performing began long before his Netflix debut.
In a 2021 interview with Energeticcity.ca, Temple discussed his early experiences in entertainment. He explained that he appeared in modelling work and commercials in Taiwan as a baby. Later, he became involved in theatre during elementary school in Canada.
His early experiences included school plays, musical theatre and locally organized performances. These activities helped him develop an interest in acting that eventually led to professional training.
Although audiences primarily recognize him as Hunter Chen, Temple’s background includes several years of stage experience before his breakthrough television role.
Where Did Mason Temple Study Acting?
Mason Temple studied acting at Studio 58, the professional theatre training program at Langara College in Vancouver, British Columbia. He graduated in 2017.
Before enrolling, Temple performed in productions around Fort St. John. One of his early influences was a Stage North production of A Christmas Story, which he discussed during his interview with Energeticcity.ca.
He also participated in a student theatre group called Spectacular Chair Factory. The group developed original material, including a production titled Hallways, inspired by student life at North Peace Secondary School.
Temple eventually decided to pursue formal acting training after receiving advice from professionals he met through theatre activities and festivals.
His stage credits include:
- Angels in America: Part One: Joe Pitt in a Studio 58 production.
- The Refugee Hotel: Manuel in a Studio 58 production.
- Satellite(s): Li in a Solo Collective production.
- The Code: Connor in a Green Thumb Theatre production.
- SLIME: Ev in a production presented by the Banff Centre.
These credits are documented in the Banff Centre’s 2018 SLIME program.
His theatrical training provides important context for his later screen performances, particularly the combination of acting, movement and musical performance featured in Ginny & Georgia.
Who Does Mason Temple Play in Ginny & Georgia?
Mason Temple plays Hunter Chen, one of Ginny Miller’s romantic interests in the Netflix comedy-drama Ginny & Georgia.
The series follows teenager Ginny Miller, played by Antonia Gentry, and her mother Georgia Miller, played by Brianne Howey, as they navigate relationships, family secrets and life in the fictional Massachusetts town of Wellsbury.
Hunter is introduced as Ginny’s boyfriend. He is portrayed as an intelligent, musically talented student who makes an effort to be a caring partner.
Their relationship becomes increasingly complicated as Ginny develops feelings for Marcus Baker, played by Felix Mallard.
Hunter’s storyline explores teenage relationships, friendship, disappointment and personal identity. His musical interests are also part of his characterization.
According to Netflix’s official Season 2 cast guide, Hunter struggles with the breakdown of his relationship with Ginny and uses music to process his feelings.
The role became Temple’s first major television credit and introduced his work to a wider international audience.
Did Mason Temple Really Tap Dance in Ginny & Georgia?
Yes. Mason Temple has real tap-dancing experience, and his abilities helped inspire one of Hunter Chen’s memorable performances.
During his 2021 interview with Energeticcity.ca, Temple explained that he had learned tap dancing while growing up in Fort St. John.
He mentioned his ability to tap dance to the show’s creator, Sarah Lampert, initially as a joke. The creative team subsequently incorporated the skill into the series.
This detail explains why Hunter’s musical performance reflects something Temple could already do rather than a skill invented entirely for the character.
It also illustrates how his earlier performance training influenced his television work.
Did Mason Temple Help Write a Ginny & Georgia Scene?
One of the most interesting aspects of Mason Temple’s involvement in Ginny & Georgia is his contribution to a scene about racial identity.
In Season 1, Episode 8, Hunter and Ginny have a tense argument about their experiences of racism, cultural identity and being biracial.
The confrontation is sometimes called the “Oppression Olympics” scene.
In a March 2021 interview with Seventeen, Antonia Gentry confirmed that she and Temple were allowed to collaborate on the scene’s dialogue.
Gentry explained that both actors drew on their experiences growing up biracial in predominantly white communities. Although their backgrounds differed, those experiences helped inform the characters’ disagreement.
She also credited Temple with introducing the phrase used to describe the confrontation.
In a separate interview with Elite Daily, Gentry discussed how their real-life experiences influenced what the characters said to each other.
This was a collaborative contribution to a particular scene, not evidence that Temple was a credited writer for the entire episode.
It remains a noteworthy example of how actors’ personal perspectives can contribute to a television production.
What Other Movies and TV Shows Has Mason Temple Appeared In?

He is credited in the season’s opening episode, This Wouldn’t Even Be a Podcast.
Temple also participated in Netflix Tudum’s June 2025 cast interview, where cast members responded to questions about the show’s characters and storylines.
His continued involvement demonstrates that Hunter remains part of the series’ wider group of Wellsbury characters, even as the central story focuses primarily on Ginny, Georgia and their family.
How Old Is Mason Temple?
Mason Temple was born on January 17, 1996, according to his publicly listed entertainment biography on Plex.
That makes him 30 years old as of October 2026.

What Makes Mason Temple’s Career Interesting?
Mason Temple’s career illustrates a transition from community theatre to professional stage work and international television.
His route into acting included local productions in British Columbia, formal training at Studio 58, performances in Canadian theatres and smaller screen roles before Ginny & Georgia.
Two details are particularly distinctive: his tap-dancing abilities helped shape a scene involving Hunter Chen, and he collaborated with Antonia Gentry on dialogue addressing the characters’ different experiences of racial identity.
These contributions show that Temple brought more to the production than his performance alone.
For viewers who know him primarily as Hunter Chen, his earlier theatre work and additional film and television credits provide a fuller picture of his acting career.
